Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Haha my bantam Mille Fleur Cochin that hatched my BC Marans is still taking care of her "babies" at 13.5 weeks and they are now twice the size of her! It's hilarious to watch her cluck to them when she finds something good and these huge birds come running over to take food out of her mouth

hey is you frizzle a roo BG?

I'm thinking Hannah may, in fact, be a boy.

Awfully red comb and wattles. I have ZERO experience with banties but there is just SO much red ....

Plus, the little bugger bit me today when I picked him up to put him in the coop as the rain started and he got left behind!!!!

(Guess he's figuring it isn't manly to accept help from the ladies ... ???

) Only ones that ever bite me that way are the boys ....

Oh I don't know I've had a few girls bite me too. Are you going to keep him if it's a boy for sure? and you could go with the name Jack like in Jack Hannah. LOL

I already have a "Jack".

I really would like frizzled Ameraucanas/EEs so I probably will keep him regardless, assuming he continues to fit in with the flock. Probably will work out better if Hannah is a "Hancock" for my long term plans because - assuming he can handle my small "large fowl" girls - I will get bigger frizzled babies if their mom is the bigger of the 2. Just hoping he is able to cope with free-ranging with my full size roos or I'll have to cage him which won't please me or, I'm sure, him.

Barn Goddess--I think Hancock will be fine. I have 4 roos right now (in a flock of 32, I just can't deside who to keep). Two are adults and two are juviniles, pecking order curently goes like this:
Top bird, Adult OEG Bantam "Fiesty"--he is the SMALLEST roo of all, and he rules with iron spurs!
2nd Adult red sex link "Racey"
3rd Bantam Light Brahma "Columbia"--he's my cuddle chicken, btw
Bottom, youngest boy "Hemster," I don't know what he is, but it's definatly LF
I really think if your birds free range, or at least have plenty of room, that he will be just fine, but you may need to cage him at times to ensure parentage, particularly if he isn't getting his pick of the ladies!

Update is: we're grandparents!! although my son says we're great-grandparents, b/c he's the grand pop! One Barred Holland chick out of the shell yesterday, white leghorn first time broody did not peck him/her. Peeping away underneath '9/10 a big fat hen' this morn. 9/10 rolled egg number 2 out of the nest and I took it away and buried it. I'm waiting on eggs number 1 and 4. I guess I should get a back-up incubator? I got some chick starter last night. Is this okay for Mom too? I guess it's going to have to be.

Still no luck on posting my pics, although I did manage to get one onto the website... Perplexing.
