Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Quote:
I had something similar happen once. I found a similarly "ded " chick. I picked it up, and set it down in the sun, to deal with in a little while. Well a little while turned into about an hour. Suddenly I heard LOUD chirping. It was that chick! She is about 4 months old now.

Whew stony I loved the story but was really getting worried you had stuck that chick inside your sports bra.

Glad to hear yours and newlyweds both made it.

We have a baby!!! Well, it hatched out last night, and I was so tired, I didn't get around the boards until now...So, without further ado, here is what is supposed to be the result of an EE hen and a naked neck roo...(baby doesn't appear to have the "naked neck" like I've seen on other babies)...Oh, and sorry for the crappy cell phone pics:

Baby is doing quite well today! Eating small amounts, but I'm sure that will increase the next few days...Momma hen, Beaker, is such a good girl...don't think I could have asked for a better Momma! We have ventured into the yard a few times, and I'm guarding her like heck from the other hens, that are very curious...My RIR hen already grabbed her and tried to sling her (of course the one moment when I was looking away...little brat), so the "big girls" are NOT allowed around the chick for the moment...(they are all out in the yard, but I keep them at a distance...)...Oh, and another egg is in the process of hatching! This baby is a first generation Olive Egger baby (EE hen X BCM roo)...I have to get ready for work in a little while, so I'm crossing my fingers all goes well while I work the overnight shift...there are 8 more eggs in the nest, so I'm excited to wait and see what happens...hopefully I'll come home to a another healthy baby or two in the morning!

being your my "peeps" I thought I'd share this with all of you. My beautiful wife and I ate our 1st Sumatra today, and it was INCREDIBLE!

And on the broody front....I still can't find where "mama" is hiding her eggs.....

and I think you should say we ate our first sumatra that we processed today. It's kinda like when I said we were going to put our extra roos in the freezer, you should have seen the looks I got.

YES, that is what I mean. And yup, it means extra roo's born in a penned area next year.... well, they will be freezer camp bound. As for the ferrel flock, I'm not sure how I would ever get the boys, without freaking ALL of them out. So I guess those boys are safe. I will venture to say...it was the best chicken I have ever eaten. I'm a dark meat guy. my wife likes the white meat. Even she couldn't get over how good the dark meat was.

I know there is no comparison to what we buy at the grocery store. How did you cook it? and when i said we were going to put our extra roos in the freezer people would look at me like what? I'd have to say well we are going to kill them first.

now that is funny! I baked it in the oven, with orange sauce glaze. Saving what is left for soup stock after we eat the next one.
