Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My barnevelder, Cinnamon, is currently setting some eggs. She started with an assortment of duck eggs on 2/29 and we added some chicken and guinea eggs on 3/7. We should be hatching on 3/28.

This will be Cinni's second hatch. She is a wonderful broody.

There were 12 eggs under her. I have seen 2 chicks do far. I only put 4 under. How long so they usually stay on the nest once they start hatching? More could hatch tomorrow.

Yeah I couldnt believe it but my local TSC had assorted bantams! I just thought they carried layers and broilers. Not that bantams dont lay but you get what Im saying!
I saw the bantams when I was there a couple weeks ago, they were so tiny and if I didn't have a broody i sure would have been tempted.

Ok so yesterday and today I gathered the excess eggs that my broodies couldn't fit under them. I swear out of 15 birds they all had 15-20 eggs a piece under them! This morning I chiseled some fencing out of the snow and ice and separated the broodies from the rest. No more cheating with other hens laying in their nests!!! Hubby and I were up till 3am making an incubator too (as my yogurt maker is full...lol) so I can start a batch that way too. It was sad candling and seeing how many were so close and then squeezed out. I stuffed what I could in the yogurt maker just in case some were within a day of hatching. One way or another we'll have chicks soon enough!

She will stay maybe 24 -36 hrs then she'll want to bring the chicks out to start teaching them, so if you want more to hatch either a broody will have to take over or you best start up the bator.

yogurt maker? could you post a picture, my yogurt maker came from Lemans and I never thought of using it to hatch chicks. I hope with all the work you have put into it you get some chicks..

I think it is harder for them to hatch at the small end you'll have to keep an eye on that one and maybe help. How did you get such small print robin, I thought i was going to have to get the magnifying glass. lol. is the painting one of your roos? very handsome.
