My first egg hatched today!!! I went out to check Smoke, my broody bantam this morning and raised her up and saw a broken shell and then found the new baby still wet. I had my camera right there with me and would you believe I was so excited I FORGOT to take any pictures!! I checked her again around lunch and nothing else is happening but this baby is dry and looking good! And I FORGOT to take pictures AGAIN!! I am going to check her in a few hours. Smoke is sitting on 4 more eggs. Today is day 21 but a couple eggs were added after the original set date. She kept adding eggs every time one was laid. Finally had to put her in a crate by herself so she'd quit adding eggs to her nest!

My Scarlett took her chicks outside for the first time this afternoon and moved them into the big coop tonight in an out of the way corner. Everyone is acting normal.

Ugh No chicks yet. My friend come over to look at the chickens while I was gone and said that Gracie (broody hen) was off the nest when she came over.

Does that mean she knows nothings happening? I went out and its dark she kept looking down at her breast but it may have been because it was dark and the light hurt her eyes...

most of my broody's have gotten up for a short snack and poop when the 1st egg pips. For broody's lockdown is from 1st pip, until the oldest chick needs to eat and drink.

My Ethel is setting on 5 eggs. She clucks her displeasure when I open the door of the box to check on her but today she screeched and bite my hand! She has never done this before. This is the 4'th time she has been broody. I did manage to get her to let me look at 2 eggs this evening and they had movement and the air sacs are getting larger! It is day 21 but we had a streak of very cold days at the beginning of her days so I'm thinking maybe there will be a delay in hatching. She has successfully hatched all but 2 of the eggs I have let her set on so far so I won't get worried for a couple more days!
Scarlett456's Gracie is my Ethel's daughter! I think it is very cool that momma and daughter are broody at the same time and due to hatch the same day!
