Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

That bottom pic is definitely the Stink Eye! Translates to: "Stay away from me and my eggs or I'll rip your heart out"
Here's my little game hen gone broody. Let me tell you it's contagious! I have chickens goign broody all over. I just love this look in her eye. All the broody hens have it. It's like they are in a trance with a touch of the "evil eye" LOL

Maybe let one sit on it may hatch out a future president. LOL

I second what perchie.girl said about covering the chicken wire so the baby chicks can't slip out. I used to not mind it - and thought leaving the gaps was a good idea because the babies could rush out if the bigger chickens came around to cause trouble, but now I see that momma is quite capable of taking care of the babies and will defend them completely. But the scarey part is when they get out and she can't get to them to help or protect them.

I haven't fixed the 2x4 welded wire in a few spots and the babies keep going in and out of the run area. It drives momma Smokey crazy - she bokks at them - they used to come back - but now that they are 3 1/2 weeks old it's like they just laugh at her. It's causing me headaches in the evening when they decide to run off instead of head to the coop like everyone else. Momma yelling at them doesn't matter to them anymore. Guess they're in the independent stage of adolescents. :)

just a side note that tractor has chicken wire on it those chicks when they hatch will be able to walk right through it at first. You might want to invest on some plastic hardware cloth to cover the sides. Its inexpensive and you can cut it with scissors and put it on with zip ties. Just to keep the little ones from going through the wire and scaring the begeez out of momma hen.

Let me just say that I have discovered that I very much DISLIKE raising baby chicks! The first time around it was fun caues I didn't know how much easier it was to take care of hens than chicks. I am not enjoying this at all. One of these black australorpes or my BO's had better go broody for next time or I'm gonna loose it!! I do not want to have to raise chicks ever again w/out a broody mamma!! I'm just sayin'. :)

Right there with ya! Won't hatch eggs without a broody again. Definitely will use broody for day olds as well. So much easier.
