Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Boy my 2 mommies are being little stinkers, they got into this morning after everyone left the coop and again this afternoon. makes me want to put them in time out. What kind of example are they setting for their chicks?  lol

Haha. I'm picturing two little chairs facing opposite directions and your hens pouting because they have to sit there. I know what you mean though. They can get pretty nasty with each other.

I had a panicky moment tonight. Went out to put everyone to bed so I could go to bed and couldn't find Smokey and her chicks. Turns out she had already gotten them inside and was sitting on them in the corner of the coop. I just had to get Topsy and her babies inside along with a few teenagers.

It's getting easier. :)

I had a should have been video'd moment today. We get home from running around and one of the runner ducklings is in the pen with the pekins. It had JUST gone through the fence. I watched it happen. I go out and go in the Pekins pen. They start running towards their coop (typical) with the 5 day old runner ducking chasing them. The lil one gets to the coop, turns and starts running around their pool. I'm 6 feet tall, walking in normal strides and the lil 5 day old runner is running as fast as it can ahead of me, standing straight up as runners do. My wife on the back deck laughing hysterically. I finally caught the lil bugger and brought her back to Penelope, who was quacking like a fool at me.
Then we sat on the back deck, had coffee and watched Patrick, Penelope and their lil ones swim.

I can see it now.

Oh that's too bad. So sorry for your loss. Do you mean it's dead or missing? If missing it may be hiding. Poor thing. I usually keep the little ones inside until they are about a week old. I'm certain the broody doesn't like it, but I like to give them a chance to know how to hide.

It is gone. No clue where. I guess the big ones snatched and killed it. We did an emergency swap after this.

sigh... I think we have 4 more broodies, 2 more just hatched 14 babies. I don't have ROOM for these!! And breaking them is so hard to do.:(
Sold one mom and her babies, thank heavens, but they aren't leaving until Saturday. Feast or famine.

Take the eggs and let them finally give up on their own they will. eventually.

We have 5 chicks now and another egg hatching. Is it normal for them to hatch over three days time??? There is one egg left out of the 8 she started with. :)
