Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Broody Blue Copper Marans, Naima, ate one of the eggs today (day 6), sort of. I don't know if the egg got broken and she got caught with "egg on her beak", so to speak or if she deliberately broke it. There was a developing embryo in there.

DANG!! I was out of it for one week and I missed A LOT!! I did candle my eggs!! I seen this one egg theres definantly something wiggling around in it!! The WHOLE egg is really dark except for a small section at the bottom part of the egg if you hold it horizontally!! Oh! And an LED Flashlight works perfect for candling eggs at night time!! I also found out my broody hen has a BIG stink eye LMAO she really doesn't like it when I take the eggs from underneath her

Can't figure out why (J/K) But it's really cool because if you slide the egg near her she will take her beak and slide the egg underneath her/onto the pile of eggs she's hiding underneath her!! That is really fun to watch!!

That's great! Hope she keeps it up for you

Im not worried if she lays or not now. She has 5 eggs and I am hoping she goes broody again. I feel bad because I sold the last two she hatched. They were layers and I didnt have room for them and they are easier to sell in the first week. Anyways I want her to be able to raise them til she cuts em off. So now just waiting for her to set. And fred and wilma both were great with them. It was really the coolest thing I have seen. You guys might just be egging (no pun intended lol) each other on but even without your nonstop broody talk it really is addictive.

Katies,
I haven't candled my 2 broodies eggs but my little Cornie (black Cornish Banty) growls at any hen or guinea that comes close to her enclosure and nest. It is a weird sound!!

She never leaves her nest when I am in the chicken house but today I walked in and she was off her nest and taking a dust bath but as soon as she saw me she high tailed it back to her nest. Talk about protective!! Bet I would get pecked if I tried to check out her eggs! :)

*POW*
She somehow will hear you open the door and coming running from the other side of the driveway!! I still haven't managed to figure that one out she isn't as dumb as they act sometimes!! The big rooster we have will even chase you down if he catches you messing with the eggs hehe but he really doesn't like getting sprayed with the garden hose so I think he's learned to stay away from me I'll get him good LMAO

That is so funny! I don't think there is anything dumber than my guineas!! but......they sure know what I mean when I call out 'Treat, Treat" -- they come running.
