Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

John, Melow is so pretty. Her nest is so inviting too, so round with lovely colored eggs.

Kizanne, I don't know if they learn not to squish their eggs and chicks, but I was surprised this time to see my Henrietta sitting on her eggs with her legs way out to both sides, as if she was doing "the splits". She did that a lot, and I don't know if they all do or if that was just her method. Seems like that would have given her pulled leg muscles, but it didn't. I don't even know if Henrietta was trying not to squish eggs or it was just more comfortable that way, unlikely as that seems.

cute Jak.

Big Red my RIR broody hatched 5, 1 didn't make it. I did save the one yesterday. Right now she has all 4 under her and all seems well. I still worry about this girl. I never worry about my Sumatra's. But Red is an older girl, 1st time broody. So far so good. She has 2 RIR/Sumatra mutts and 2 Sumatra chicks. 1 blue 1 black.

Omg I get busy at work and don't check the thread and I'm 670 posts behind!! I'll never catch up!!! :p

My GLW, Caesar, went broody last week. My soon to be rehomed young rooster is mating my 2 non broodies, but he is only 4 months old..... so I'm going to put some eggs under and hope they are fertile. The first few I did don't seem to be fertile.... Im going on a business trip on Friday for 10 days so I won't really know how things are going.... She seems to be a good broody so far and being 1 of the 2 alpha hens and the largest bird I have nobody seems to be messing with her nest.... So I guess I'll try and see what happens.

Popcorn my b1st time roody with the chicks has been an awesome mama hen..... I gave her many more then I should have being a bantam and a 1st timer, but she is totally fine and thriving with her babies!! She has found her place in life..... And she's now soo happy! She is finally growing back her neck feathers and her comb is starting to pink up... Finally... She was looking a bit haggard :D

Now back to trying to catch up on all the activity!

I'm not sure what breeds they are....... But mama (A blue partridge Silkie) was running with a Jersey giant, a Frizzled Japanese, and some Silkie Rhode Island red mixes.
Very wide range of breeds.

The eggs are due the beginning of July. (Cant wait!!!)

Yeah mine didn't have her legs out the the side she looked like a russian dancer. Bom, Bom, bom da bom da bom bom

Well Gracie has 2 chicks so far and one more internally pipped scratching at the egg. She keeps trying to take the chicks out of the nest but they wont have that. They just want to sleep! Lol Thats ok because it gives that other egg time to hatch!
