Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Quick question for the broody experts. My broody's chicks are a week and a half old. She's had them in the run with all the other chickens since day 2. However, at night, she takes them under the coop rather than into the coop. Although the run is as secure as we can make it, I would feel much better if she'd take them into the coop so I can close the pop door and know they're inside and safe. Each evening as it starts getting dark, she'll hop on the ladder and go into the coop - but the chicks just wander around at the bottom of the ladder until she comes back out. It like she's trying to show them what to do - but they don't get it. She'll do that a few times and then finally lead them under the coop. They are certainly capable of going up the ladder into the coop - they climb all over everything in the run - and the ladder is a solid piece of wood with smaller pieces nailed to it for them to grip with their toes as they climb up. When will she start taking them inside the coop at night?

Somebody needs to let my girls know it's supposed to be contagious!

Miss Lizzie was running around in FULL cabbage mode this morning but she lays her egg and off she goes - in full cabbage mode. Clucking all the way.)

Day 13 for Miss Naima, however. Still sitting on 8 eggs.

LOL! Yup I have one sitting, one trying to sit unfertile eggs and building a nest, One that thinks she wants to sit, and one walking around growling everywhere she goes....I took them some grass and nesting material and away they went building a nest lol

Go Miss Naima! She can do it

My problem is that I don't have a roo because I wasn't planning on breeding so I am having to beg for fertile eggs from friends.... lol

I know, my broodies tried the same thing. The babies couldn't make it into the coop so they tried to nestle down under it. I said no way! I got out my little rake and scooted them out of there. It was quite a production, but I slept better knowing they were safe inside. Required putting momma inside with one baby first, then she stayed put inside and I hustled around getting the others.

Some chicks will catch on sooner then others. She's trying to teach them, but they aren't getting it yet. I help my littlest chicks to get into the coop by putting a 4x4 under the doorway for them to hop up to, even though the ramp is right there! By the time they were three weeks they could fly up, they still don't like to walk up the ramp lol. You can help them learn a ramp if you can catch them, mine are not easily caught.

my broody RIR does a similar thing. Except it is under a tree near the coop instead of under the coop. you need to pick her and the babies up and put them in the coop. After you do this a few times they will get it. I don't care how secure your run is, it isn't secure enough!

Hi all broody experts
big_smile.png

I have 2 broody chickens that have guinea eggs under them and they are suppose to hatch on 7/4 and 7/7 but the temps are so hot and tomorrow is suppose to be 103 degrees.

I don't plan on doing anything with them-------------------- but was wondering my chances of the eggs hatching because of this heat!

someone was jealous of the attention so I took her picture. She is my buddy.

a few more of the crew. Some of the big girls and a couple of Sumatra Roo's.

these guys also seemed to be posing. Yes it is 2 different black Sumatra Roo's. They look nearly identical.
