Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I am SO thoroughly enjoying my first broody, Onyx, and her babies. The babies are fearless around the rest of the flock. Onyx is such a good mama. Here are some photos I took yesterday:

"Hey Mom! How about a piggy-back ride?!"

"Me, too!"

"Good grief! They think I'm either a set of monkey bars or a trampoline!"

"There are seven of us are under here warming up!"

Those pics are so awesome, aren't mama so tolerant of their little ones.

I have a pip!!!!!!!!!!!! This is so amazing, I cant wait to see this little one. I dont know if I should call it "Ness" ( Miracle in Hebrew) or Blanket lol

I dont know about your broody but I recently had two broody silkies one went broody about 3 days before the other but they decided to brood together and together they had 19 eggs have no idea how they decided who had which eggs but anyway I knew when each went broody I found 5 eggs sort of pushed to the front of the little house on day 16 so removed them Day 21 8 babies hatched under broody one but both broodies stayed sitting 2 under one chicks under the oher. on day 19 one egg was pushed out into their run but I couldnt get to it without disturbing them so left it there on day 22 3 more eggs looked to have been pushed out to the front of the house so I took them but wish I hadnt now. on day 23 broody 1 hatched the last 2 eggs under her and broody 2 hatched the egg that had been out in the pen. I know its not ideal for hens to sit togehter but they did and hatched 11 of 19 eggs and I think they would have hatched more if I hadnt intervened Next time mama knows best.

Well sometimes mamas know more than us, well most of the time, my lil bantam has one egg left under her and when I went to check this morning it was laying out from under her cold, so I think she knows it's not going to hatch and placed it there. I'll leave it for the rest of the day and see what happens. BUT CONGRATS on such a great hatch, please post pics...
