Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

They say it doesn't do any good to complain, but I did, and today have eight little ones, including a coal black...yipee! Hopefully sun out tomorrow and get some pics! (Oh, the rat poison? Find the rats tunnel and drop a chunk in - it will take it back to the nest. I've never seen a rat dead out in the open, not saying it wouldn't but...also, it would take alot of rats to get enough poison into whatever ate it - likely the dose would be too small, but it is something to be careful with since they make that stuff tasty)

Candled hen 2 (day 5) last night. 10 eggs, 2 duds, so 8 left.

Hen 2 (day 20), is doing fine. I did a quick candle, looks like we're doing good! Her 6 eggs all look great.

Yay!!! Today I went outside to the broody's, to check for pips. I didn;t see any, and when I put the Daisy back (houdinni was out eating) I heard a loud chirp. I hadn't seen all the eggs, and I thought one was trying to hatch. I ran and got my brother, yet we didn't see or hear anything. I had no idea which egg it was. I picked up a random egg that wasn't being sat on, and it was wiggling and chirping!
I brought it in to show my parents. I held all the other eggs up to my ear, and I heard two other eggs peeping and wiggling. So 3/7 eggs were chirping. The first egg I heard I could hea it trying to open the shell. I'm so excited! I'm going to check back tonight.

Counted four more, total twelve, four more eggs felt warm, and she went back to sit on them! It is eggciting! leaving her alone after some food and water, and see what happens. Broody next door is talking to her clutch and heard a peep over there, of course she turned to stone when I looked over there!

Sorry double post!

I went out in the rain and set up the broody side of the coop. I'll move the girls tonight and hopefully they will sit tight in the new spot. Earlier I found poor Topsy it ting on the roost ladder because an Orpington pushed her out to lay. And I noticed Smokey had acquired one of Sunny's eggs.

Haha typical broody. I also love the statue pose when they're placed on the ground to do their business. Congrats on all the fuzzy butts!
