Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

We have chicks!!

Our broody hen has finally seen the fruits of her endeavor... we have one little chickie peeping out from under momma this morning. She is sitting on a clutch of 9 eggs, so there should be more when we go back out tonight to shut them all up. It has been a LONG 21 days.. I am so happy it is having a happy ending!!!

Still one chick here - Momma hen is still sitting on the other egg.
The baby is definitely a boy *sigh* I held him today & got a good look at him.
The one that died while hatching was definitely a girl, I took a good look at her last night.
Please please Lord, I know I asked for one girl --- but PLEASE let the one girl be alive!
-hoping hoping hoping that the 3rd egg is okay and a live female-
The little boy was born 2 days early, so I still have until tomorrow or even Thursday to wait for the last egg to hatch.
So far the little boy is healthy & peeping; giving broody something to practice with while the girl is being born, yes?
YES oh please, let it be a girl. Wish this egg lots of good luck please!

for a wittle girl peep.

I'll pray with you for pullets. Presently it appears my last clutch was 3 boys and 1 girl. So I seem to have the same problem you do. Those 50/50 odds must be per chick rather then per clutch.

Put them under my girls last night at around 6:00 Pm
She took all twelve eggs LOL, hesitated on the blue eggs but she took all twelve eggs. Here she is shoving them under as I hand them to her. I put a blue silicon mat under the litter so they had a better chance of not breaking.

that's an Orpington for ya. They just go broody and stay that way. Our last batch of eggs didn't hatch bu Broody Mc Buff wouldn't give in so I got a local dozen eggs for her Americana Barred rock and Road Island Reds. She never wants to go out so I gave her sugar water with acv along with her regular feed. She didn't even make any noise or stir when I picked her up and my wife swapped out the old mail order eggs for the local ones.Things should workout this time

Broody Buffs are extrordinary!
My neighbor has a hen who hatched one, and is currently brooding 17 new little friends of the same age as her hatchling. She is hilarious with them, trying to cover them all, and them running around.
Yay for broody buffs!

My last broody for this year Miss Betty White is still holding on to her 2 they will be 9 weeks old this Thurs. I think she is trying to start a separate flock with these 2 since i'm pretty sure they are both roo's
