Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hatch day for our Black Star hen has arrived! So far we have 1 little Speckled Sussex chick running around, plus an EE chick that's totally dry and a Blue Andalusian that's started to pip. I can't actually get a glimpse of most of the eggs, so hopefully there's more going on under there.

i can't see the pics :/, it says "NO IMAGE AVAILABLE"

Woohoo... the egg was suppost to hatch yesterday. No pips even today :(. It's just squirming and I bet it's trying to get out by pushing the egg open! Silly little chick.. you've gotta peck!!!
So... I just wish the egg would pip. I don't care if it's a little crack.. just wanna know a little life is in the egg. :( :( :( Hurry up time!

This is the first time we've used shipped eggs, so I have to ask- whats your guys average hatch rate of shipped eggs like? We're used to about 95-100% hatch rate from our own eggs because we get them under a hen the day or so after they're laid, but some of the shipped eggs don't seem to be doing much. Is it normal to have a few losses with shipped?

With shipped eggs you normally get 50% hatch rate, but I've had worse like 1 out of 24 hatch in the bator. I've had better rates with shipped eggs under the broody, but still not 100%. Definitely had higher hatch rates with homegrown eggs, but I wouldn't have the diversity in egg colors if I had not purchased shipped.

You can separate them. Put him in a pen by himself until heis needed to procreate. He's a rooster, he's not going to stop mating his favorite. She's probably easy for him so he will keep it up. You an try putting some no pecking stuff on her comb so when he mounts and grabs next time he gets an awful taste, that might deter him. But seriously he's going to keep mating the ones he can mate and if she's easy to catch she's going to keep being mated.
oh .. well my mille fleur always beats up any other roo that trys to mate her but the game bantam they are like best friends they dust bath with each other and share food spots share food share treats but i just feel bad for my little game bantam hen she is by her self no one tries to mate with her no one goes near her idk

Our broody decided to take her babies out yesterday! I had my back turned & she showed them the way out the door of the coop.
She was eager to take a dustbath, and really showed them how it's done!
