, I'm pretty annoyed/sad at the moment, i went down this morning to check on my broody and only found 8 eggs under her when i originally had 11??? The only thing i can think of is one of the other hens has gone in there and broken some and then the broody and the other hen have eaten them, my hens love eggs, but they dont peck them open on purpose. So now I've put her into lock down by closing of the whole nesting area with some water and food, so none of the other hens can get in, they will just have to lay in the buckets of straw i have left out for them. If there are any other suggestions you have on what has gone down here I'm all ears.

Yes they might break open eggs that aren't viable and either make a mess or eat them. Sometimes other things will come and get the eggs when we aren't around. Putting her in lockdown will help reduce the likelihood of one of the other chickens eating her eggs. But if she was the one breaking them - they will still disappear. I've had my broodies crush the eggs that were spoiled. I'd find the crushed stinky egg in the nest near them.

I decided to walk to the hens today and when i got to the field next to it i could see in the distance the Buzzard flying around so started running and when i got there it was gone, i was abit nevous but when i left some crows arrived so i felt abit better and left the crows some food to keep them there for longer. Here is the hens and the chicks, Asparagus and Bella :):

My chicks are 10 weeks old, and still roost with Mamma Tilda, who still stretches her wings all the way down to "warm" anyone who might be sitting on the poo board below. Poor girl, that can't be comfortable!
Meanwhile, she has stopped terrorizing everyone else in the flock about them (thank goodness!). They do make their own way with the flock and often eat seperately from each other and Mamma. The CWs are especially brave when it comes to making their own way.
I banded the pullets last night, and gave everyone their names. I have 20 chickens, and they all have names. Without banding, I would only know a few (save the completely different breed!) based on behavior and appearance.

The Hens are:
Mamma Mathilda
Agnes Applegate
Gladys Kravitz
Edna Garrett
Molly Malone
Hyacinth
Daisy
Rosie

rooster:
Maximus Decimus Meridius

Chicks:
pullets:
Elektra
Storm
Endora
Frances
Jett
Snowflake
Samantha

cockerals:
AndDumplings
GarlicRosemary
BarbieQueue

Wow! I have a hard enough time coming up with names for my 17 chickens! Lol

Congrats on all the chicks!
