Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

By this time next week, I should have little ones! My drake seems to be getting protective...I went over to peek at mama on her nest, I was no closer than 20 feet away, and he scurried over to stand between me and the nest box. Oh how I'd love to candle them again, but I don't really have any cause for concern, I just want to see the progress. I'm just afraid mama would run me down and eat me at this point!

Question: will a duck and or chicken lay on 2 eggs?

We have ducks and chickens for eggs and just plan ol' pets. We weren't wanting more but ended up with a male duck. We decided at some point we may let two of the fertile duck eggs stay... would we be more successful with an incubator... I see everyones ducks lay on *a lot* of eggs. If there is only 2 eggs left for them to lay on will they actually do it? Or just keep trying to lay more and more?

I also brought up chickens because it is out chicken we would have to put them under. Our female is a Khaki and I heard they are horrible for becoming broody - that they never usually hatch their own eggs.

If your chicken is anything like some of mine[bantams] anyway she will sit on as many as 1 to 20 just as many as you want to let her have. My hens have hatched as few as 2 and as many as 7, we have to practice birth control here.

only way to know is to try it.

Robbo-- I just wanted to drop in and tell you that the most successfull hatch I've had here has been under a Khaki Campbell. Don't even worry about what you read about KC's being poor brooders, my KC is a fabulous mom.

Help! I don't think mama has been sitting on the nest much today. The eggs are due to hatch in the next 2-3 days. What's going on??

I went out there a little bit ago and she was laying next to their pool with my drake, it looked like she was sleeping there.
