Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

Did you candle melissamerry? maybe there was something wrong.

So for three days she put herself to bed with the other ducks and left her nest empty. When I checked on the eggs one of them had a red streak visible. I'm assuming that meant that the duckling died in the egg?

One of the eggs was just yolk and my bf cracked open one other told me not to look. I think that means it was a partially developed duckling.

TreeTrunks has been much much quieter now though. I guess this season just wasn't hers

I'm sorry, but she knew something wasn't right. Next year she will be more mature and hopefully she'll have some ducklings.

I hope it's okay, I hope she finally hatches some ducklings she sure has been faithful to brood. :fl    I'd defiantly let it go another week,.

I had to take some eggs out...I candled one of them and it was completely dark on the inside, I couldn't even find the air sac...I'm gust glad it didn't pop in my face...or bathroom... About the same with the others. There were 2 left after all was said and done, one was clear and the other looked to be about 14 days or so. I left both in the nest, and she got back on the nest for a while yesterday but she's been off most of the day today. Does anyone know of a way I can incubate this one egg without having to buy an expensive incubator? I swear this duck's going to drive me mad...

All she seems to want to do is preen and get in the pool.

ETA: they are molting, I'm thinking this may have something to do with it?

Mine just got over being broody for most of the summer I finally had enough and got them out now they are starting to molt. This is a bummer since she has been at this off and on most of the summer. I wish I knew of a way but it's not only the heat but the humidity that keeps the duckling going. I know there are links where you can go to make an inexpensive bator. Know anyone who has a bator they will loan you? Go to the NC thread and see if anyone would be willing to incubate this egg or loan you a bator.

I'm hoping to let my hens hatch their own eggs(though babies and momma will be brought inside after that, as I don't have any other way to separate them from the drake). All of my ducklings will be sold, however, as I'm only allowed six waterfowl on my property.

Looking at this thread, I'm really excited! Hopefully my hens go broody next year. (They're only 18 weeks old now, so I don't expect them to go broody until after winter.)

Make a donut with a towel place the egg down inside do you have a small desk lamp where the light faces towards the table? put a 100 watt or 75 which ever you have and put it over the egg spray with warm water at least 2-3 times a day when you turn the egg. Have you heard from anyone on the NC thread? If you have a thermometer put it next to the egg so you can keep up with the temp. you don't want to cook it. here this shows what temp they need to be at and humidity.

For a temporary bator, my grandpa suggested a good box and a heating lamp. Not ideal, but for a temp. solution it should be alright. Be sure to mist to make sure it stays humid. Also be careful not to open the box too much.

Thanks guys :)
I found an incubator that was less expensive than I thought it would be, so I went ahead and bought one. Even if this one doesn't hatch, I'll at least have the bator for next year...silly duck...

I just hope the eggs didn't get too cool without mama sitting. I'll probably candle tonight and see what's going on *fingers crossed*

And I get to be a broody mama for a couple weeks! Quack.
