Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

:fl     Hoping you candle soon so we can find out how baby is doing... Mama Quack ;)

I forgot to post here lol...

I candled, and I am VERY happy to report that as far as I can tell, the lil critter is still happily bouncing around in his egg! The egg is mostly warmed back up now under a lamp, and I'm just waiting for the bator to get settled so I can put the egg in. Yay!! Now the hard part is trying to keep from candling the egg every night lol

I had to turn him (I've named him Eggbert

) tonight anyway, so I candled quickly while I was in there, and I didn't see any movement. I also couldn't see the veins as distinctly as before. I'm worried I didn't get to him in time

Not sure if you've seen this yet, but it looks like as the egg ages it does get darker. So maybe it's just too dark to see all the veins clearly?

Thanks! I've pretty much been using the candling pics on the Metzer website (which don't seem all that helpful to me), so I hadn't seen that. So maybe everything's still ok :fl

The egg wasn't as warm as I would have liked, so I moved the thermometer and increased the temp in the bator slightly. It's at 99.5 but I moved the thermometer to the bottom, before I had it propped up to be even with the top of the egg. I want to go to the store and get a better thermometer though...or 5...I just want to make sure he's as warm and cozy as he needs to be :D

I can't remember the exact temps, but I do think 99.5 is a good temp... But I would have to go back and re-read duck egg info.

I've seen anywhere from 95 (don't remember where I read that) to 101.5-103 for a still-air bator (Storey's recommendation). Looking again, Storey says 99.5 for a forced-air machine, so maybe I should turn it up a little more...off to search the interwebs again...

Ok so here's a question. I am going to begin breeding ducks and want to use the broody hen method opposed to the artificial method. My only problem is, none of the girls have gone broody! So that means I need to go and buy one. I began looking, and so far have had no luck. So would you guys be able to give me suggestions in where to look for broodies to buy? Thanks a lot! :D
