Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

The family might disown me if I go to TSC again... Y'all heard of Crazy Cat Ladies, right? Well, according to my kids, I am a Crazy Duck Lady! LOL
Well the way I see it if she's sitting on eggs and they aren't going to hatch your just replacing babies with eggs she was sitting on that would have hatched. Get my drift.

Just slip ducklings in and then go and show eveyone the new ducklings, just don't tell them what you did till they are grown and on their own.

Here is one baby with my two Moms, the mom on the left is sitting on 2 more babies from TSC, and 3 eggs also! They both want to sit on the eggs, I said "fighting" before, but I think that was a poor choice of word... rather, they are taking turns sitting on the eggs and they seem to be sharing duckling responsibilities. They are co-parenting! LOL And they each will cover up the other with straw! That is what you can see them doing in the pic. So far so good, but no peeps from the eggs, and as of today, we are at Day 37, so I expect the 3 adopted ducklings will be it.

On another note, my 3rd adult Pekin duck, she has been sitting on a handful of eggs too. She is not nearly as tolerant of me checking out her nest. She flaps her wings like mad, so violently that I was afraid she'd hurt herself. So this am, I saw one egg like nested inside of a broken, icky smelling egg (Looked unfertilized). I didnt do anything, but I'm going to have to... Any suggestions there? Thanks in advance!

That is just the sweetest picture! i think it's adorable they are sharing!

Personally, i'd don some gloves, strong coat(sorry i deal with scovies lol) and remove her and check the eggs, ducks don't bite and i doubt she'd injure herself, the mama duck i have right now is a hot head, we compromise even if she's throws a hissy.

Ha haa!! My ducks bite!! (Mainly when they think my finger is a worm. Or more recently, when mama duck doesn't appreciate the fact that I'm holding one of her ducklings, even if its to put it on the proper side of a fence)

My geese nest is loaded with down feathers today. That's a first. I think I may have a goose getting ready to set. I took 8 eggs out of the nest and put in another nest because it had 18 eggs. Today it has 13. Three geese layed in that nest today. I was hoping one would lay in the other nest. How many eggs can a goose sit on?

I also candled 41 chicken eggs and 16 duck eggs a few minutes ago. So far I am 100%. That's pretty amazing.

My ducks quit laying when it snowed three days ago. I only have 8 eggs in the nest. I had 10 and the geese broke two so I moved the ducks out into another area and moved the eggs to a nest that two ducks were using. They were getting out every night and getting into the other area and laying so I figured it would work if I just put them into the area. Maybe the move or the snow messed them up. If they don't do something pretty quick, they will be going to the sale barn.

That's SO exciting!!! What kind of land are you sitting on to be able to support that many fuzzy new mouths to feed? I'm only "allowed" to have 4 poultry/fowl for my size backyard in Arlington. But, I have 19. :) (15 of which are ducklings)

All I can think of is theres too many ducklings, do they all seem to be okay? maybe she is covering them you just don't see it.

That is very possible. She is a little on the small side. They seem fine. The one I thought was going to die, did. And everyone seems healthy and strong and curious. They're chasing flies. Its stupid cute. :) (Thank you for responding to my inquiry)
