Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

This is our first broody ever!!! What do I put her in? We only have the chicken coop, I need ideas. Should I separate her from the male too? Can I keep her in the run or just move her out?

Do you have a large dog crate or Extra large one they make awesome broody boxes. and she won't want the drake around while brooding.matter of fact it's best to keep the drake away from new duckling unless supervised.

you want to make sure she is in a protected place to sit and hatch

I think we are planning on moving her into a preditor safe coop but it has no run.. I will have to go out everyday to let her out. I am assuming she's just starting to go broody does the "attitude" problem get worse?

Yep, but she won't attack you unless you try to take her eggs, then you maybe wearing a duck on your hand or arm,

they can really pinch. When she gets down to business she'll probably come out once a day, she'll want to eat, poop and bathe and she'll do all of this with her feathers all fluuffed up and making noise like chirps, it's quite comical actually. Sometimes you have to make them get off the nest but hopefully you won't have to.

I'll chime in and add this: with my Khaki, she has always sat really tight. This time if she wanted to sit, I let her. I just totally left her alone. She was getting up, and doing the bath, poop, food routine, exactly like ML said. I think that *if* you are going to move her nest, just be sure that she sees her eggs every single minute. And then keep things quiet and calm while she re settles. Or lock her up, like ML said. I've never personally had to lock up a broody, but I did just have to lock up my entire flock due to weather, so I used a big dog crate to keep my runners apart from the adults. It works.

Oh, and today I found a total of 4 Khaki x Mixed Ducklings. All 4 have bibs and probly wing tips. One is black, one is khaki, and 2 are grey. They are so so so adorable! Pics to follow as soon as I get the pc up again. I did try to identify genders, without success-- I couldn't see anything.

I have another problem! Our americauna decided that the ducks eggs were hers and went broody on them

. You got to be kidding me right ? lol.......I kicked her off the nest 3 times and she wouldnt budge. So now not only do I have a broody issue now I have to break one lol..

Seems like all it takes is for one to go broody then you have the domino effect. maybe give her a couple eggs to keep her happy?
