Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

I have a wee problem, my one duck who has never gone broody has... she has a nest under the tarp of wood at the side of the house.. she flies out there first thing in AM, at least for now she is returning at night but um, wth? ugh.

this has been going on for a bit i didn't realize, i thought we got rid of this area, as i found another duck there and fussed the tarp better and pulled all her eggs but now frey has taken to the same spot...

she cannot stay out there overnight but.. i know from past experiences moving nests doesn't go too well. I don't even want anymore babies.. but no clue on the development of these eggs.. and yes, i could candle but i am awful at it.

I swear Muscovy are gonna drive me batty!

Ok, we moved Amelia(frey hen) into the barn with her eggs, she had plucked feathers and was still there tonight at put in pen time. No way can i lose a duck and if she is killed the babies are goners anyways( i do not have an incubator) moving nests is tricky i am not sure she'll take to the idea, but we took her fluff and all...

I just moved one about a week ago GQ but I locked her in for a day after I moved her but she has sat tight since, Hope your girl will too.

Thanks, ML.. i didn't lock her in, at this point she'll either take it or leave it... she was foraging when i went to put the ducks in a few mins ago, she is still in broody mode though? we'll see, frankly another 8 'scovies i don't need right now(yes, that many eggs)

I took advantage of broody racing out with feathers stuck out all over to go in and candle, I only gave her 4 eggs since space for sleeping is at a premium here, well saw veining already and won't be a week till Thurs. so we're going to have 4 new ducklings towards end of May .. Don't ya just love seeing those new babies..

that is great! Miss Penelope will be a week Thursday also. She is on 12 cause I'm crazy

. She is really a good girl. Every morning when I open the coop she comes out with everyone. I remove fresh laid eggs from her nest and put her eggs back in. She eats, bathes and goes back to the nest. So far not like last year when she was biting me

. I figure I'll candle in a week or so and remove non developers. I should have ducklings a few days before you. Can't wait to see lil fuzzy butt Runners

Oh stony you are so tempting, I love your Runners and will have a weak moment one of these days and have to get some eggs I am thinking. after all my 2 bantams hatched me some Blk Austrolorps, so my Scovy girls could hatch me some Runners right. Do you sell your Runners you can't keep? my problem is I want to keep everything that hatches here.

I did sell 2 ducklings last year but I felt awful afterwards. I know I'm crazy too. just in a different way.

we will this year. We could use a few more girls. We are ok on boys unless I build a new coop run which I may do. We are officially a farm now and are trying our best to act like one.

.

I always set aside nice clean runner hatching eggs. I actually sell quite a few.

I most likely won't sell them as ducklings. Technically they still will be, but with the rate the runners grow when I sell them in the fall they will be practically full grown.
