Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

What a sweet pic. glad she is settled. I've got one more move for my broody, when hatch starts I will put her into the lil coop so she can have even more privacy and a little fenced in area just for her and babies. Around 15-17 more days for my girl.

She's sitting tight this morning refusing to get off the nest

. Sweet she did'nt reject the clutch now I have to figure out what to do when these hatch lol. Never a dull moment around here.

No you wait till ducklings are at least 3 weeks old to try putting them together, hens can be so mean and peck out eyes, give the ducklings a chance to put size on and be able to get out of their way . Mama Ducks are not as protective of their young as chickens are. I'm putting up a temp area for mine since all my flock is together and last year we lost 2 ducklings one to stampede and the other we're not sure, my dachshund brought it inside the house but my dh thinks someone else killed it, we just don't know. But I am not taking any chances.

Wise indeed to protect the ducklings. I lost 2 from KC's hatch, they slipped out of a very tiny gap I'd left in the drop door (for ventilation). I still have my fully feathered Runners and the almost 3wk olds separate from the adults. Now back around Easter, when the Pekins were tiny, remember, they had the 2 moms, and those moms insisted on going right into the flock with the babies. But I saw both moms were protecting. And that is no chickens to deal with either.

Tell me about it I told dh NOT to let the drake out and keep them separated well... he thinks he knows it all sooooo ! There ya go duh

Thank goodness non of the eggs are crushed she's still upset & wont leave the clutch...
