Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

I lost one of my call ducklings yesterday the little guy made it to almost a week old but was smaller than the rest, but it seemed fine until yesterday when he went lethargic and not walking far and just upped and gave up :hit I know I still have 8 left but am still sad the worse thing is the mum has not even noticed  ,

I'm having to build a new pen for the drake as he was OK with them for the first day, Then they were fair game on the pond and he was trying to drown them      So since then he has been with my two chocolates in a corner of the pen fenced off as mum goes mad when the others go near the ducklings too!

On the good side my Black is due to hatch today or tomorrow and she is sat on 10 eggs so hopefully more of the little dears running around :fl

Awww! :hugs I'm so sorry! Good luck with your next hatch! Post lots of pictures, if you can! (Momma ducks make my meanest broody look like a tame little kitten!)

A thousand feathered pardons Gramps!

Dayton - kicking out bad/non-viable eggs is a good thing. Mom's doing her job to keep the others healthy. Much better than funky foul rotters exploding in the nest - trust me!!!!! Ma nature knows what she's doing. So that she kicked that one out and has kept others under her is a GOOD sign. Good LUCK!
I have all the hope in the world that this is true!

All these babies showing up and knowing that we are just a few days away from hatch day is killing me! LOL......I really want to know the eggs under the girls are good. They sure are possessive.

Won't let me in at all! Like I know I can get at them by just winning the hissing contest but with hatch so close I don't want them too mad at me! LOL..

Oh....congrats to all the babies and grandparents...

I'm sorry gysygirl it is always hard to lose even one. But I think mom is just too busy and probably a good thing too she doesn't have time to mourn just gets on with life and caring for her lil ones.
I wish more people would take to heart that drakes are most of the time not compatible with tiny new hatchling but sometimes we have to learn the hard way, I usually do.
Looking forward to seeing your new babies when they hatch, All the best..

I know what you mean, last night mama duck thought for sure she was going to stay out with her babies all night under the lil coop. I had to crawl under there and as I was she came at me ready to fight, I was able to grab her though and get her into the house then had to round up the 4 ducklings boy was she fit to be tied when she could hear them peeping outside. I sure hope I don't have to do this every night . Grrr

Went out to check on mama and ducklings and found a 2'blk snake coiled around one of the ducklings, Thank God I was able to uncoil the snake I am pretty sure I killed it I hit it up against the feeder house. Baby is still alive but has a nasty cut on it's leg. I have it in the house right now I have sprayed out the wound with veterycin and have it under a light with a stuffed warm animal this happened about 1 hr ago and baby is still alive, it was being crushed by the snake so don't know about any internal injuries. Just hoping for the best right now. I went and caught mama and her ducklings and put them a back inside the coop locked up for now. I am so upset and shaking from this. I can hear it peeping so hopefully that's a good sign. just not sure if I should put it back with mom since I won't be able to spray it's leg if I do. Advise please

I'm sorry! and yes sadly some drakes are not okay with ducklings. Your doing the best and right thing by separating!

Oh no!

I think sadly, i'd give it a day to see how it recovers, if you cannot treat it with the mama, she cannot help with an injury like this ... that is just horrifying! I hope it recovers!
