Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

LOL. Vent sexing is -*- DIFFICULT -*-!!
All 6 babies look great today, mom's finally sitting & staying put. Looks like they are eating & drinking. I listened to remaining eggs and heard nothing. I couldn't get them out before mom returned so they're still there. Plan is to get them out tonight.

Ok time for strangeness. KC had another dead embryo today, another non absorbed yolk sac but not nearly as large as the last. I'm starting to wonder if she'd stolen the Rouen's eggs? 2 deceased + the 1 broken in the past week. 11 in her nest today, plus the 3= the 14 should have. I don't get the deceased ones.

So they are out of the egg like this H? look like someone is pecking the eggs open?

Glad to hear mom has settled and ducklings are doing good.

My blue runner duck Francine has been sitting for at least 29 days and no ducklings yet. This is our first time and I'm clueless, hopefully she isn't. How long do I let her go? I don't dare try to touch those eggs, she is crazy protective. I know there are 3eggs left in her nest outta 5. A week or so ago I found the remains of a shell and yellow merky water. The flies are horrible around her and it stinks, kinda a mix of death and poop. When she left earlier today I snuck a peek and it looks like they are all intact, I searched the bush quickly for any sign of what is creating the death smell but I don't see anything. Is that a normal smell. Will she continue to sit on them while they hatch or do they typically move off the nest to give them room?

Sounds like you may something rotten in the nest. I'd check, she'll get upset but what if one explodes and causes bacteria to go all over any that maybe good. It is not a normal smell. You really need to candle the remaining eggs if they are all rotten and the flies are laying eggs your duck is in danger of maggots getting inside of her. if she is sitting on rotting eggs. Get her out of the nest remove the eggs candle them if they are still good then remove nasty nesting material and replace with fresh try to leave some of the old bedding if it isn't real bad, then put eggs back and put mama back.

I have had a stinky egg explode, I gently wiped it w/ wet paper towel, replaced the straw bedding and all was well. Your ducks nest might smell a bit "duck--y"... But it should never smell of poop and death. Sorry.
