DOes anyone know where you can buy the old fashion tray feeder that sorta had some wire on it so the girls could not get on or and in and scratch all food out? I have an 84 year old friend who is looking for one and I dont know where to start.

I don't know where to find the older types but you can find trough feeders w/ swivel rods on top to discourage roosting on the feeder. But you need to heve space in the trough for the rod to swivel...if you fill it too full the rod won't spin and they can roost for days on top. I learned that today after setting up the same trough feeder and filling it too full!!

Here's the reel-type trough feeder that keeps the birds from roosting on top and keeps them from scratching the feed out:

All of the wire top trough feeders like he is looking for that I could find are only available from overseas suppliers. Maybe someone else can find them here in the States.

The reel top feeders work well though. Just make sure the reel doesn't bind so that it can spin freely.

I just use the cut off tops off large plastic fruit juice barrels.

When I filled them full (my hens free-reange by the way), they would scratch it all over, and the waste was more than they were eating, and because the food was there, they didn't need to go out and bug hunt.

I now limit the food I put in, in the morning, yes they get in there and scratch around, but that's what chickens do, but no food ios wasted, and they go out and bug hunt. In the evening they get more food, and they eat all that, maybe a little left over.

Just what I do, it works for me.
