Old favorite hen acting odd and smells terrible!

Pics

No she's not constipated she actually has runny droppings
Is her crop emptying?
Fluid in the abdomen below where the maggots are??

Were you able to find the swat gel?

Sounds like she's got a bit of gurgling going on, has she aspirated fluids or meds at all?

I'd watch to see how well she's drinking.

With maggots still emerging, they may have breached the abdominal cavity. Hard to know.

Thank you. It's a roller-coaster ride with her she seems good this morning no more crazy noises eating a ton and drinking. She could of aspirated some tylan I'm usually very careful with that though idk. It's just touch and go with this illness. She acts way worse after baths. But I have to do those. Her crop is emptying. I'll check her abdomen it feels flat not fluid like or anything. I couldn't get swat gel but she's been strictly indoors.

Have you seen any more maggots today? I’m sorry you saw a couple the other day.

@Wyorp Rock would ivermectin drops help at all in this situation? If the maggots feed on flesh wouldn’t they get the ivermectin into their system and
Yes im still seeing maggots picking and bathing a lot with her. Ive Been gagging non stop this whole week im so nauseous from this ugh. I think she said ivermectin won't work in this case unfortunately 😕

I just don’t know if that’s true. I don’t know enough about it, but I’ve read a few studies of ivermectin even being used in humans to treat maggots. Same with dogs, and rabbits. Some use it as a wrap, some take it orally. I was hoping for an explanation as to why it wouldn’t work on your hen, because I must be missing something.

Are you sure she’s not breathing in any of the water in her baths? That sound does sound like fluid in her somehow. I read that frequent baths may not be great for the healing wound, but again, I’m not an expert. I’m sorry!! Is a vet an option at this point?

If the maggots are still there, then try the Ivermectin at this point to see if it helps. :idunno

Pour On dose is 0.09ml per pound of weight administered to the base of the neck along the spine making contact with the skin. Repeat in 10 days.

If @KRack wants to explain how to use it as a wrap (?) that would be good.

The wraps I saw were used for goats and seemed to be the paste. I wasn’t sure how that would work for hens because of the drastic weight difference. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I honestly am not sure if it will work at all, I just found some intriguing studies/informations, and felt similar to you, at this point what’s it going to hurt to try? I didn’t find instructions for the paste for chickens, but if I’ll look in a bit and share it if I can find that.

I’m sorry, OP, I’m just trying to think of anything that may help that you haven’t tried! ❤️

I will try, ill pick some up today for her. I guess that's worth a shot. Now she eats her food with tons of water and gobbles it. She's a bit odd only likes her food with standing water in it. She could of aspirated doing that. Today she sounds great. Plus super chatty. It really is a roller-coaster with her. My poor rooster is losing his mind right now non stop pacing stressed to the max over her not being with him. I caught her nodding off in her bath as well one time the other day so maybe she did it to herself...

I would personally use the pour on cattle kind, and use 3-5 drops depending on her size. I think bantams are 3 drops, regular size hens are 4 or 5 drops. I’d probably start with 4 if I were you, but you may want to search on this site for dosage instructions and come to your own conclusion. Keep us posted, I’m still praying for her! ❤️

👇Ivermectin dosing like most all medications is dosed by weight. For Ivermectin Pour On it is 1mg/kg which translates to 0.09ml per pound of weight. A 5 pound hen would receive a max dose of 0.45ml. (See post#95 above)
