🥵 Florida is HOT! I grew up with chickens on our farm (Bush Cabin) in MD. Mom had a small flock - maybe a couple dozen. My memory says they were probably Rhode Island Reds. I raised chickens in northern AZ, both Cornish Rock Cross and mixed layers. I'm stuffed in a tiny condo in south Florida now, so no chickens. But my daughter nearby has a few mixed layers and wants to build a new chicken coop for maybe a couple dozen layers. I'm a former general contractor and she wants me to design it, so that's why I'm here.
Spoiler alert: Protection from critters and low cost are two of the biggest factors.
I've known about BYC for years. I probably first learned about you through homesteading and survival books and magazines. I'm happy to be a part of your flock! And may the Lord send a blessing to each one of you. "Gramma Lynne"

:welcome

Good morning Gramma Lynne! You can find some great coops built by other members here (this is a good source of ideas): Coop Articles

I know that FL heat, I used to live there myself. You'll want as much ventilation as possible (maybe even consider an open air coop). If you want to drop in on the FL state thread, I'm sure you'll get tips on how best to build for your part of the country: Florida state thread

Best wishes!
