Old Layers

[Standard Hen]

Retirement home here too. I got some older hens this fall that someone was giving away due to moving, I think I have got two eggs out of the 6 of them since they got here and they are all big girls, big eaters and soooo friendly. I MIGHT have to part with them come spring so I can bring in some young ones, I am saying that now but when the time comes I might not be able to. They were well taken care of but always penned and when they go out to free range they stay very close because they are not sure of that big open bug infested world....lol

Of course you have to kill them when they get old. Just like you do with your parents and grandparents.

We live in a farming community and the farmers look at us like we're nuts when they suggest we put an old hen in the stewpot, and we laugh. No way. I always said I'd make a horrible commercial farmer.
