Hi all,
My sweet, smart 7-year old alpha hen Lady Sybil (Ameraucana) seems to have started laying phantom eggs. She laid her final/lash egg about a month ago, and now she goes into the nest, sits for an hour, then comes out singing the egg song...except there’s no egg. I thank her and she toddles off as usual (she goes on until I thank her). At first I worried she might be egg bound, but I put on a pair of gloves and checked 2-3” into her vent and nothing is there. She is eating well and seems happy and healthy, not acting at all like previous egg bound hens have. Is this common for a hen to pretend to continue to lay eggs after their henopause? I think it’s so heartwarming if so, and figure it’s the least I can do to go along with it if it makes her happy. After seven years of faithful service, she deserves it.
