Older speckled sussex hen

She is very nicely mottled so I believe she's been through a few molts = much older than a year. She also has spurs which tells me her lady parts retired. If she was laying eggs and you moved her to new digs that could cause a vaca. But I'm thinking her days are behind her.

I think her best days are behind her too.
I have 9 adult hens total including her and I get 6-8 eggs a day. I have never got 9. That and the fact the she never laid a egg when I put her in the mini coop tells me she's a retired layer.
It's strange that she likes play around in the nest box and sit on the eggs briefly.

A pullet or hen with spurs is not an indication that she is done laying. My friend has a 5 year old Rhode Island Red hen with spurs who is still laying. I actually have a bantam pullet with small spurs who just started laying.

My speckled Sussex was the first to go broody. And she could not be broken. Gave her babies in the end.

She will get in the nest boxes and act like she might be going broody and then jump out later. She won't commit. I put her in the mini by herself with 3 eggs too and she sat the eggs for a around a hour but still never commited.

Just enjoy her beauty for as long as you have her. Mine was a sweety and I miss her, she would sit in my lap and take cracked corn out of my mouth, (kisses). I was heart broken when she passed.

She is more friendly than my ISA Brown's and barred rocks. She accept new flock mates much quicker/easier than ISA Brown's and barred rocks too.
I would rather have a entire flock of her disposition.

Well the old speckled Sussex hen died this morning.

I found her dead in the chicken run no signs of a predator attack she was just old.

She has been making a lot of choking sounds the past couple weeks. When I found her she had a purple face. I think she choked on something.

@bigz1983 I am so sorry for your loss. I still miss my SS, she was an old lady too. But it's still hard when it's their time
