Hi chicken lovers,
Well I had over 50 chickens and rosters and now have about 15 in all. Thanks to our Coyotes who come into my yard daily, they are slowly getting eaten. I am not sure what to do at this point. We cannot shoot them or catch them, against the law here in Arizona. We are on a acre with lots and lots of trees and they have a huge tree they roost on at night and a huge hutch I made out of pallets, so they are really happy, but I am not!!! I always get breeds of all sorts, like them to all look different. But this has gotten out of hand. Any advice would be sooo welcome. I am ready to just break down and make them a chicken run out of one of my horse panels to keep them safe. I have had 15 sultans and polish breeds and they dissapeared in two nights, I think that was a man made coyote!! But I am not buying anymore until the dang coyote problem is fixed.....advice????? I can understand your frustration so have you asked what to do when they are killing your live stock hardware cloth will stop coyotes so will hot wire run it at two heights about 4 inches apart

Hey Penny, I will go out tomorrow and ask about the stock hardware cloth, I am thinking at this point to make them a small run that goes from the hutch to the horse stall, it is pretty big, and on days where I am outside I will let them all freeroam the yard, all I have to do is yell...CHICK CHICK CHICK and they all come running, so atleast I can get them back in the hutch...Thanks for the info... I'm in AZ. too! You can shoot them here in AZ. as long as you have a hunting license and follow the rules or game laws. It is however against the law to discharge a firearm within 1/4 mile of an occupied structure without the permission of the occupant, (get the permission in writting).

My chicken run is made of old horse panels(sides and top), then 2" x 4" welded wire, and the 1/4 " hardware cloth wire over the top of that.

By the way, welcome to BYC!

Hey Blue Baby, What part of Az. I'm in Laveen:) Yeah we did look into a gun but being there are NEW HOUSES all around us acres, we can't shoot a gun here. I do not have a license but maybe I will get it and shoot at night, who will know who it is that is shooting. Although are butthead Coyotes like to attack in the broad day light, hence my problem. I think I will do what you did, put them in my extra horse stall I have in the daytime. with the netting or Hardware cloth, penny suggested. I am always making something, so I am sure I will come up with something ...something that allows me to have ferns hanging from it...OF COURSE:):) Damzilchick

Welcome! Hot wires work great

Hello again, I answered your other post. If you are allowed to use electrified fencing around your coop and run, it should be very helpful in sending coyotes off without losing any birds.
Hey Drumstick, The only problem with that is we have cats and two dogs and I would not want to hurt them.....We really did try to think of a idea, even thought to put the wire around the whole yard, but I guess someone did a ways back and they were told by HOA that they could not do it because someone's other cats might get hurt!! WHO KNEW WE HAD HOA!! DamzilChick
