Hi all chicken enthusiasts. I just found this website and am looking forward to checking it out. I used to raise both meat and egg laying birds but haven't been involved with any since the early 80's. I recently moved to an acreage east of Edmonton, Alberta with my son and we will be building a coop and want to start off with perhaps 6 chickens. My favourite breeds are Rhode Island Red and
Golden Wyandotts but around here they are not easy to find so we might have to make do with other types. Unfortunately if ordering from a hatchery the minimum order is 25 so that's out for us. We have quite a large garden and I built a 8' x 12' greenhouse kit last fall so I'm looking forward to starting plants and getting dirty again. I am retired so I have lots of time (except when it's time to golf). I spent a lot of time in my youth on a farm in Saskatchewan and just love the crow of a rooster (even when they woke me up at 5:00 a.m. every day). So if any of you readers in my area know where I can get a few Rhode Island Reds or Golden, even Silver Wyandotts please e-mail me. I'm enjoying the acreage life again and sure would like to get into chickens again to go along with 2 dogs and a cat.

Welcome to BYC!

There are a few canadians here on BYC. I am not sure if there is a really active thread that you might connect with them. But here is page to several threads of canadians looking for other members. Maybe you could chat on one of these threads or contact one or more of these members to see where you can find the breeds you are looking for...

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 on try finding a thread for your area. You might also check out the local feed or farm stores, many of them will have chicks available this time of year (or know who has them).

Thanks Kelsie. I've checked with the feed store, not much luck there, yet. However, did get a website for Alberta Chickens that might help me.
