Olive egger? I am lookjng at my collection of back yard chickens and am considering a cross with my blue Ameraucana rooster. I would like to produce sex linked olive or green layers. I am considering the hen to be a barred rock or a cuckoo Marans. Are the CM eggs significantly darker than the barred rocks? Anyone have any experience with this proposed cross?

Judging strictly from pictures of CM eggs, yes the CM eggs are darker than BR eggs. I would think the BR would a good hen to achieve the egg color you you want. What other hens do have to choose from?

I also have Australorps, Barnevelders, and Black tailed Marans. I could definitely get a variety of green layers, but I was hoping for the sex linked, barred coloration.

I’ve done the chicken calculator 100 times. Am looking forward to blue and black pullets and blue and black”barred” cockerels. Will be fun to see. Right now the parents are only a month old, so …SPRING!!!

Barred rocks lay a cream to tan egg so they won’t give you olive eggers, more a light green to greenish blue.
Cuckoo Marans like all Marans should produce a darker brown, which will give you a darker green aka olive.
