Our first-time broody hatch is now going great. We have eight babies learning from mama. Thanks for all the helpful info! Here's my question. Five of them are crosses between one of our three blue-green-laying EEs (not sure which one(s)) and our Welsummer roo. I read here that they should end up laying olive eggs, which is great. However, they all have yellow legs. Are olive-eggers like EEs in that most of the ones who lay the pretty colors also have green/grey legs? Thanks! Don

Here is a comparison of Araucanas, Ameraucanas, and Easter Eggers from the Ameraucana Breeders Association. You can see that there are pretty strict requirements and standards for the first two, but absolutely no requirements for Easter Eggers. Easter Eggers can have any color of legs or anything else. I had one that laid a pretty mint-green egg. She had yellow legs.

Some hatcheries used Ameraucanas as the base for their Easter Eggers. This has caused some people to think that Easter Eggers should have the same traits as Ameraucanas. That is not the case. There is some linkage between the pea comb gene and the blue egg gene, but there is no linkage between leg color genes and the blue egg gene.

A Welsummer should have yellow legs. I have no idea what the genetic background of your EE’s are, but there is a good chance they have a mixed background. Without knowing the genetic background of your chickens, I’m not going to try to guess what leg color you might get. But genetically, if the egg you hatched was green or blue, the female chick has at least a 50% chance of laying a blue or green egg. If the father was a Welsummer from a line that lays dark brown eggs, the odds are that egg will be a dark green. But you really won’t know what you have until you see the egg.

Here is my EE chick at around a week old:

And now:
You can see how her leg color changed!
I have one with light green legs,I hope it will lay green eggs.
