Omaha Ne Permit DENIED

took it all the way to the top of the health department... more civil folks but same no answer... looks like the language in my HOA cov. is vague enough for them to say no ... they wrapped the bee thing in too since bee's could be stepped on ... Naturally.. haha... they really feel to heed on the side of caution and ask for written permission from my hoa first then they said they would be down... I plan to snag up a few signatures and push it forward as far as I can... now time to find time to go door to door and see if I can somehow get my neigbors to see how raising chickens is okay? yipes wish me luck

You can tell the inspector that "people like us" are glad people like him don't live nearby! I paid good money to move out of town, build a beautiful home and get away from "people like him!

Sorry, comments like that really gripe me!

That's really dumb. I am glad I read this, I live in the omaha area, and I was thinking of getting just a couple chick eggs and hatching them and raising them; being an animal lover and all. However, I do know this city is REALLY dumb with things like that. For instance, my good friend moved here from Phoenix, he is a dog Trainer/Breeder/Behavior specialist. The head of the humane society (whom I like to call the "not so" humane society) basically found any reason to get him out of Omaha even though he was complying with all statutes regarding breeding his dogs etc... they even dramatized a little bit and when they couldn't get him ... they decided to nit pick and call the city over everything. I know dogs are different, but its the same scenerio. I think its just if they don't like you, they just don't and they pick. They actually checked to see how many clothes my friend had when inspecting his house... now what does the humane society have to do with how many clothes YOU have?? Aren't they supposed to be concerned with things like ... how much FOOD your animals have? And how well they are being taken care of?? That's just an example. Sad when the pound has more authority than the police here. This is why I want to LEAVE here.

Glad I checked this. Me being me, I am like the poster. I'd love to just DO IT and get the chicks and all but you don't want them to come take your chickens because of some nosey neighbor who tells on you. I'd rather know I am operating within the law requirements. GEEZ they make it difficult.

Hi all my son and I are working a chicken pen. We live live inside city limits and are enclosing the pen. Do we need a permit? And what are the city requirements as when I called for info they really did not offer too much info.

For starters, and as a HOA president I know, it is illegal for government agencies to enforce HOA covenants. Those are private matters and can only be used as such. Also as a Planning Commissioner in a large suburban Atlanta county, I can tell you it is not valid to make land use / permitting decisions based on private covenants. Then I can see where you have a lot of discriminatory remarks being made by those guys. Get your elected councilman and mayor involved and make sure to get plenty of media coverage. That is what public officials understand loud and clear.

For the benefit of anyone reading this thread...things have changed in Omaha. I live in a southwest suburb and had no problem getting a permit for chickens. Before I even applied, I talked to my neighbors to make sure they were OK with it and would not cause me grief. They were all actually excited by the idea...probably hoping for eggs. The inspector could not have been nicer. I asked him if many people had chickens here, and he said it was almost unheard of up until the past three years, when it EXPLODED! You do need a fence that the chickens cannot squeeze through, so 3 inch gaps would not be good. Don't let this thread discourage you. Nebraskaclucker,
I hope things have since worked out for you!
