OMG Commercially raised chicks and how they are treated.

agreed and while it may look horrible it seems that the little buggers handle it well as after that they get packed in boxed and go for a 2 day journey to their new homes.

Fact of the matter is look at what people want to pay for chooks. There was just a thread where someone said that a hatchery pullet at "point of lay" should be around $6. with that in mind there is no way for any hatchery to handle the chicks differently and stay afloat. I am not sayin it is right or good, or bad for that matter it just is what it is.

Yeah, i attended a seminar at a university a few years ago concerning the abidance of Organic egg production. Whole Foods started the fair and ethical treatment standards for suppliers to their stores and later the Organic industry adopted them as a standard. As hard as the USDA-NOP might try, industry is pushing to do anything but follow the rules. they'll pay twice as much just to cheat the chickens and still pass the certifiers inspection/audit. it was comical the contraptions that were being developed.

many are used as packing penuts to keep other small orders warm. I dont know how many are actually culled but I heard that any extras, eggs, chicks whatever that die or are unneeded get made into pet food. So at least they are going somewhere. But I think most hatcheries try to use them up as packing peanuts first.

hey rosco do you have any info on that i would be curious to read it
