OMG!!..coy dogs were just in my yard!!

I've been trying to find pictures of coyote dog crosses. We have seen something that may be exactly that within a mile of our house twice now. I've seen coyotes in the wild and this is similar but not exactly the same somehow. And it definitely doesn't look or act like someone's pet dog either. Scary! We've been locking our birds up earlier every night too. Our yard is fenced and the dogs urinate around the perimeter but I don't kid myself that we're anywhere close to predator proof.

We had a similar scare, only the coyote was rabid. He came after the farmer next door while he was checking his fence line. I was out at the barn feeding my horse when it happened. It was making the most awful snarling sounds I have ever heard. All of the animals on my place got all worked up when they heard it.

hi guys...panner123, you are correct!..

..i live in MA.,..so i dont really know if they are actually "coy dog mixes"...or actual coyotes....its just what we have always called them here..

....and they banned trapping a few years back(i think)..and they think thats why people around here are seeing so many of them now..(although for us..we have had this pack long before the trapping ban..)..and they are BIG guys..wolf looking!(only more beige color than grey color)...but i know(or think) that we dont have wolves in MA...so they must be some sort of coyote....they even posted pics of them in my local vets office because they are becoming a problem.
Will they attack my foster children or my dogs?....i have a feeling that this winter is going to be rough when they start to run out of food!..

.....We hear them feeding/hunting now almost every night as it is...THAT IS THE CREEPIEST SOUND!!..'cause we know that something is dying out there..i'm lucky that i have neighbors that care though..they will call me the next day..and ask..did you hear the dogs?..are your goats okay?...

....thats what being a neighbor is about!......thanks guys!

I know you said you dont have wolves, but maybe they are red wolves? Doubt it but thought I would put the idea out there.
I know what you mean about hearing the hunting/feeding, very definitely creepy.

magsC..um...good point..maybe we do have them here...

..i'll try to look that up and see if we do..thanks for the idea!...

3 BIG dogs is a good number, even if one dog is lured away by the coydogs the other two are still there to protect the livestock and each other. Teach the kids to make loud noises and wave their arms while backing away from the animal, this will hopefully distract/alarm the animal to at least stay still while the child escapes.

If they are hybrids (coyote x dog) they should not be protected and fish and wildlife might be able to relocate or kill them, or you can kill them.

You're right to be concerned about them later this winter. They have already been too brave around your property and will come back when more natural food sources are gone. Get at least a bb-gun to give them something to think about, a real firearm will be better.

Best to get a gun, even to give them warning shots. The coyotes here don't like to hear the noise. Best to tell your kids to watch themselves, they will attacki if hungry enough and brave enough. There are lots of rabies cases too lately, always be careful.

I have not tried this myself, but seems an interesting, non-lethal method of protecting our livestock. I have talked to Dan, the owner, operator, engineer, designer, and chief bottle washer at this very small business. He promises a full 1-year money back guarantee! He's one of us, in the means that he enjoys his animals, and doesn't want to see any harm to any of nature's beasts, unless it is absolutely necessary. He also appears to raise alot of his own herbs and vegetables. I had spoke with him earlier this year when I had a family of fox lingering in my driveway(literally). It was so wonderful to see these beautiful creatures I couldn't bring myself to harm them, but of course wanted no harm to come to the feathered members of my family either. Fortunately, the Fox moved on within a few days, and I no longer had a need for a detterent.

Red hen where in MA do you live ?
My dad lives in Granby ,Ma and the farmers there are saying that there is some type of wolf around . Suposably the Fish and game people or who ever releases wolves for the state had released them with out telling the people in the area . Farmers are complaining because there cattle are being killed and the canines dont look to be a cyote or coy dog they were calling them Brush wolves ? dont know if thats a true name for them or just a term they used . These farmers are in Beltchoretown, granby and Ware . This one farmer actually shot one and called the fish and game people over near swift river . And he said that there were wolves released to try and keep down the cyote numbers but that they didnt want the public to know because of variouse reasons .

My dad one night was awoken by a howling right out side his back porch . He looked out the window and he said there was a big greyish colored dog howling at the porch light . He said it wasnt a cyote and the thing was Huge and that there was another one at the edge of the woods waiting for it . Ever since then all the wild turkeys that he had seen every day are now all gone, he found a torn apart cyote carcas in the woods behind his house . Soo who knows what is out there these days !!!
