Thanks again for the welcomes.
I think our local laws are as changed as they'll ever be. 3 hens, no roosters, per yard. And they say the chickens have to be housed 50 feet from neighboring properties. That last part is the hard part. Yards aren't big in the city!
My biggest question right now is cats. We have 2 cats, 1 who goes outside daily. But there are also a lot of strays living in the park less than a block away that come into our yard pretty frequently. How much of a problem are cats?
We have a shed out back that would be fine for chickens to live in. They don't need an actual coop, afterall. I might have to build a movable fenced in area to keep the cats out, though. I'll have to take them in and out of the shed daily, but that's no big deal. The shed is good sized, so on rainy days, it wouldn't even be cruel to leave them in the shed all day. I've seen chicken runs w/ more than 3 birds in it smaller than our shed! And it has 3 windows. It's like a little house.
