I know how you feel, our Momma Hen just hatched 7 babies, 5 of which were pure bred Cuckoo Maran, we built her a nice little nest box on the ground thinking they would be safer. Unfortunately one Cuckoo Moran chick got stuck in a small gap between the nest box and the wall. It is very sad. We have since removed the nest box and Momma Hen has moved her brood to a cozy spot on the floor. Lesson learned.
I am sorry. I know how you feel. Once my daughter ran over a chick on her bike. She had the chicks in her basket and one jumped out, and got hit. Poor baby chick. My daughter learned a tough lesson that day too.
oh, its ok, dont feel too bad. accidents happen, and we cant help that. you didnt maliciously kill it, or anything, it just an accident. weve lost a few chikies to stupid accidents over the years. it happens to most people. we had one get stomped by my then 4 yo daughter. about 5 of the older peeps liked to chase her around the yard , she held them all the time and gave them treats, they knew who the treat girl was! well, they were running after her and she turned around and stepped on one. it got mushed. she was really sad.
once i had this teeny runty silkie chick, just days old, i thought it would die, but i tried to feed it some water with a dropper and accidentally drowned it. uuuuugggghhhh....i felt awful. but it was an accident. and actually just a few months ago, we got a hatchery surprise with 2 little silky bantams, they didnt look good, but this time i was not going to make the same mistake, one still died, but one made it, and is doing great ! so dont feel too bad. it happens.
I try not to read threads like these as it makes me sad. But I did want you to know that I think all of us, who take the lives of these little creatures in our hands, can understand your feelings when you loose one. The remaining six will be all the more precious to you.
From what you described in your original post (and I haven't read all 5 pages since then to see if more information came forth), I doubt you killed that chick. You would have noticed the unevenness of the feeder and the chick would have been cheeping its head off. It would have been obvious something was amiss. I think that chick dug up under the feeder and either died of natural causes or the chick dug out enough litter to cause the feeder to collapse on top of itself.
Either way, it was an innocent event and I wouldn't worry about it any longer. I hope you are enjoying your other chicks.
