Friday night I helped the last of my chicks to hatch. It had been pipped for more than 24 hours. I decided to step in and assist it in hatching. It went great - not an ounce of blood and the chick was placed back in the 'bato to dry.
Saturday (yesterday) morning, the chick was dry and fluffy - and alive. Overall, however, the chick was pretty small, weak, and a little "dull" in it's behavior. I decide to leave that chick and one other in the bator just a little longer...I turned the heat to about 93F, gave the chick some polyvisol, and left it for the rest of the day - hoping it would perk up and come around.
Last night, the chick was still tiny, weak, and dull but went ahead and moved her to the brooder with her little companion...I gave them their own "private suite" in the brooder, but this morning he/she is still not thriving. I'm pretty sure this one's not going to make it.
Sometimes they just don't make it.
I have helped four chicks out the shell since January. One is alive and doing well...the others all passed within a week or two. Just cases of "failure to thrive." On the other hand - all four would have dried without assistance.
*shrug*
Everyone has to make their own decisions....we learn with every hatch that we tend to.
Good luck - I've been watching an hoping for you all weekend
