since you havent heard them crow yet, and it sounded like a large person gasping behind you...i'd say it's a late bloomer learning how to crow. Are your birds jumbos? i ask because my jumbo roos mummble instead of do the normal crow. It litterally (to me) sounds like a man mummbling to himself for a second.
