My chickens kill mice and moles, but not sure if they eat any of them. They do have voracious appetites, so it wouldnt surprise me, sounds nasty though.

Not necessarily smaller and slower is a meal! As i was sitting in the run visiting my flock today (8 weeks old almost) a number came running past me to the wire all of the run, I turned and saw a decent size black flying beatle with two red spots on its back and red on the end of its antenna. I have never seen anything like it, 6 came at different times when they saw the movement and jumped up to get it, took a look at it and went the other way! lol They could have easily gotten it, I have seen them eat beatles. They all said no way, I gotta admit I thought he looked scarey to! I have tried to find it by googling different ways and I cant find anything that looks like it. I live in Nebraska Panhandle, anyone have any idea what this thing might have been? Hard looking shell, but had wings, shiney. Red on back and end of Antenna.
Isnt that the truth though? we live on the edge of forest on 53 acres and mice are an everyday occurrence here...as are chipmunks, coyotes, cougar , bobcat, bear, and drivers.... so we always have our sensors on to look out for those that my birds choose not to see. its sucks though, just this year I lost at least 6 birds to predation. one was my beloved hen Angel, but yes in triplicate to what all else sasy here, chickens do eat mice. I was equqally icked out to find a mouse carcass last year not two feet from where my American game bantam hen stood just a few minutes before... so I posted here to find out... same as you. what amazing and opportunistic creatures our feathered friends are,.. god bless them.I wish my chickens would eat mice!! Usually once or twice a year we battle the nasty creatures, Our chickens are so darn lazy they just watch them eat the feed, same with some birds... we have to do a major de-mousing every fall and spring.. If I see one that usually means there are lots more hidden under the coop.![]()
