OMG. My cornish X are getting huge. Pic.

You have great timing in posting--we pick up our fair meaties tomorrow afternoon, this is my dd's second year, so she knows what she (we) is getting into. Already commenting about not looking forward to the cleaning aspect:) We tried last year to take a pic a week....lasted three weeks...because we too were astounded by how rapidly they grew. Amazing. Will try harder to keep a photo diary this year, at least longer than three weeks (plus the fair pics and the pic I took of the guys that didn't make it to the fair, but did make it to our kitchen counter after being processed! We too are concerned about the heat, 'cooled' down to the mid 80's finally, but thinking we won't need the heatlamp this time, at least not for long. Best of luck at your fair!

remadl700, we all have to pick them up at our local 4H office. Not sure what hatchery they use.
DelcoChix, our fair is next week, I am hoping it cools down a little more, mainly for the animal's sake. Thank you for the good luck wish. We will need it, we always have stiff competition. Good luck to you too.
HHandbasket, yes it is. Surprisingly small.

Three days before we weigh in. Wish us luck. My kids are really excited, maybe not as much as I am though. I just hope they have fun. They avg. 8 1/2 lbs. at six weeks old today! Really muscular in the breast, I just wish I knew which four to take.

So how did your kids do? Just curious what type of shavings are you using. From your pics it looks as though they are the mini-flakes. By the way your kids birds look great and very clean. Our birds never look that clean.

Well, the kids did really good. Out of 89 pens of birds, they finished 3rd and 5th overall. I was really proud of them. We got beat by older kids who have earned the win. I am confident that we will win, may just take a few tries. We weighed in at 19.0lbs and 19lbs 8oz for a pen of two. The next largest pair at the fair was 18.0 lbs. I may have gotten them just a touch on the large side, but they were still really firm. Judge commented on how massive they were for 6 1/2 weeks old. We are ready to try again already. Fun project!

Sorry, I almost forgot to tell showbird that I use McFeeter's pine flakes. Super absorbant and costs about the same as any other shavings.
