Also, even the very best field guides can't be trusted when it comes to range maps. I did a year of herpetological field research, and on many occasions we found specimens that the literature insisted were nonexistent in that range

This looks like a Western Terrestrial Garter Snake or a Mountain Garter. But with it being so young it’s hard to tell. Although I didn’t think they were found that far east. Like OccamsTazer said the subspecies very greatly in color and patterns.
