Mine are through with the pecking stage, now they are flying everywhere. I had them outside, but it stormed pretty bad last night/this morning so they were back in the living room all day and they were acting crazy! They fly out, then act kinda cold and try to climb on top of their heat lamp instead of staying under it where it's warm. Silly kids! (Yep, make sure the lamp is secured!)
They really aren't hurting anything though. One came out on to the couch where the cat was sleeping and scared his pants off!!

So I don't have to worry about them *too* much, they always seem to find their own way back in and at 3ish weeks I don't think they will get *too* cold if they somehow get out in the house and can't get under the lamp right away. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny at 70 again (I hope) so I'm shipping them back out!

At one week of age the chicks moved from the house to the barn into a larger tote. I was waiting for my Brinsea EcoGlo to arrive, setup and then move the chicks into the larger space. It was a few days before I could make the big move from the barn tote brooder to the regular wooden brooder in the barn. Did not want to turn on that darn red bulb. So, Saturday I moved the chicks now 2 weeks old into the wooden brooder with their nifty heating unit and now that they are gone from the house my African Grey parrot reminds me of them often with his perfect mimic of peep, peep, peep, peep!

Mine tap, tap ,tap AND I LOVE IT. It reminds me of a time about 20 years ago. Someone complained harshly (i know you are not doing that) about the babies jabbering and babbling in church. She leaned over and whispered into my ear " I so glad you have taught your baby to be still and quite in church" Little did the lady know that my child couldn't babble and was not able to get up and fidget.
My thought is we don't always appreciate what we have... until we don't. The chicks will go outside soon, until then... make it music or get ear plugs, it won't last long.
OP I think you really love it, and might be sad when your peepers are all grown up ... record them for future reference

OMG I remember going through that.

Every sound! When I had a Grey I lived near a firestation and an ambulance garage. Add two babies..................wow, I used to think I missed that bird. Guess not. LOL

Ahhh, another advantage to the brooder I built! I made a wooden frame with chicken wire. I put self adhesive linoleum on the floor (I used 3/8" cdx for the floor). I then spread a layer of shavings. With the linoleum, its really easy to clean up. Once they reached about 10-12 days old, I also made a 2X4 frame with chicken wire stretched tight over the top of it and sit it over the shavings. This helped keep them from scratching the shavings everywhere, it keeps my peeper clean and not walking.pecking at poop (helps protect them from cocci and other illnesses. Plus, I'll have something if I need to segregate them in case of an illness. The overall dimensions are 3'X4'X 2' high. It really didn't take long to build, I had it done in a day.
