We found an egg today in the coop.
The chickens are only about 17 weeks old and with the heat I didn't expect them to lay until later.
I have a bag of Layena ready that I was going to use next but as of right now the chickens were still on the medicated starter (Purina's red bag).
Does that mean we should not eat the egg?
Yay for Jay Jay the Jet Chicken (Barred Rock)!

Congratulations on your first egg!!! I had a couple of birds that started laying at 17 weeks from different flocks. I use medicated Starter/Grower I feed it to the birds until I get my first egg then I switch over to Layer. If I have any Starter/Grower or Grower left over when I get my first egg, I mix in the leftover feed with the Layer feed. I have never had any problems. The amprollium in the starter helps in the chicks development in their resistance to cocci. It is sulfa based. There is only a problem eating the eggs layed by the birds that have had the medicated feed when they start to lay if you have any allergies to Sulfa.

It's the first egg, of course you have to eat it. Congrats on your egg!

My BR is 20 weeks and still no eggs. But I have noticed that she's been in the nesting box, so maybe soon.

You are lucky! I'm still awaiting.

I've started putting fake eggs to try and give the girls a hint. My girls will be 22 weeks next Tuesday, for heaven's sake.

Congrats! Your birds are doing a good job even in these temps.

The heat has been so bad but my new layers are doing okay. We got 10 eggs today out of 39 possible layers, BUT I'm not complaining!
