OMG what a mess!!!!(dog)

Wild dogs/wolves do in fact eat bone whole, very eagerly. They don't eat out the marrow. The difference is that raw/new bone is quite easy for a dog to digest, whereas cooked bone is not. Cooked bone is dangerous first when it's being eaten (dry splinters) and later when it's being eliminated. Digested bone turns into a substance almost like cement because it's so dry. Fortunately most of the time dogs are OK, but you should watch for constipation that looks like "more" than constipation, if the dog looks sick or is throwing up. That may be an obstruction. Vegetable oil or food-grade mineral oil can be fed to help things move through.

typical beagle... ours got into a new 25 pound bag of dog food and ate until she couldnt walk. She only weighed about 25 pounds herself. She literally ate her weight. Everything came out fine in the end (pun totally intended

). Dogs have pretty resiliant systems, hopfully she will be grand and live to knock over trash cans for many days to come.

Bones can be a problem, as others have already said. Raw bones can be passed safely. Cooked bones are another matter. Turkey bones are another matter as well, even some die hard raw feeders don't feed turkey bones.

If she develops vomiting and/or diarrhea please don't just assume its a normal GI upset. It could be. But vet hospitals everywhere know that the holidays bring an increase in the number of cases of pancreatitis, which can often require hospitalization to treat and be deadly if left untreated. Not trying to scare you, just give you the facts. And in case I need to support my information yes, I am a vet tech and have worked in the vet industry for over 10 years. Even just a gastritis can lead to dehydration that may or may not require IV fluids.

Hopefully she will recover from her gorging without any issues, but do keep a close eye on her.

I always toss mine out for the crows. They have a great time picking at the carcass and there is nothing left. Not everyone has their own local flock of crows though.

This is a perpetual misconception. Cooked bones are the WORST!! They can splinter internally - raw bones are actually softer and more palatable.

Cooked turkey bones are supposed to be worse than cooked chicken bones about splintering. Even if he doesn't get throw-up sick, still watch his poop for anything unusual, including NOT pooping or bloody stools.
