On Silkies, how do you tell if they are boys and girls when chicks?

Practically impossible. Even experienced silkie breeders are only making an educated guess until it crows or lays an egg.
Unless a rooster starts showing some streamers in his crest, but that is probably around the same time as crowing anyway.
 
i agree, it is very difficult. You can guess at around 3-4 weeks, but i have been wrong many times at that point. Maybe at 7 weeks the roos will start to show themselves. But then there are those slow starters that don't become apparent until 4-6 months.

Like they say, you may never know until it crows or lays an egg.
 
It usually depends on the quality of the bird, the higher the quality, the more difficult it is to tell at a younger age. Even still, it can be very difficult to tell.
