On the hunt for a peachick, need advice.

I have gotten peas lap dog tame! I'm in Idaho and I don't have any for sale right now sorry. These are my tame peafowl Thora and Marshmallow! You can have older peafowl that are a year or older become tame but it can be very difficult. Easiest is when they are two weeks old or younger. Thora I got when she was 2 weeks old and Marshmallow I got when she was 3 months old. Get them before 6-8 months of age and you should be fine. Perch them on your arm to make it easy and then work them when on the ground. Thora is a yearling now and Marshmallow is 6 months old now. At first you just need to work with them daily for a month or two and then you can space when you work with them. So long as they see you know you are the provider and react to you as a mother figure they will not separate from you unless you do something to make them think differently about you.

Oh my God, it is so cool to see those adorable pictures from Idaho. I spent at least an hour yesterday looking at all the wonderful peacock pictures on this site and I am loving it!! I really appreciate all the great advice and pictures!!! What a great bunch of folks here.

I am going to go ahead and wait until next year and pick a young one...or maybe even hatch an egg. Our last peacock was about a year old when we adopted him, and we slowly taught him to eat out of our hands, but there was always a bit of a fear factor going on even after four years....he was never "lap dog tame," and it would be such fun to get one to be that way. I've been given different points of view on this, but it seems like getting a truly tame bird requires getting a really young one or even hatching your own, and then playing with and handling it a lot. It was that way when I owned parrots, and seems to be the same story with these birdies.

In the meantime, I am going to see if I can talk my boyfriend into getting some chickens. We don't have any now, and we do have the room. I don't know much about 'em, but I think I have found a good place to read about them.
