Once inside the coop...

That was not the question the OP asked. I answered the question asked.

I know we are all here to learn. But learning is incremental.

The manufacturer of that particular chicken coop rates it for 8 to 10 birds. As a brand new person to raising chickens the buyer is a total innocent in regards to statements or misleading packaging on coop kits.

Welcome to BYC. Where are you located? How many chickens do you have? Some of these coops are made with hardware type wire but aren't very predator proof. A lot of people end up having to modify for ventilation & or beef them up to be more predator proof.

@Veronica G, the reasons I had asked about number of chickens, where your located, & sq ft of coop & run are.. I would never want to lock too many chicks in too small of a space. Especially in a cold region with poor ventilation. That can lead to frost bite & death. I'm so glad that you joined us. There are so many articles & information & yes, different opinions. In the end, we all love our flocks & want only the best for them. Knowledge is Power! Best of luck!

If safety is your concern, you must ask yourself if your run is as secure as your coop?

If I had a sledge hammer and a pair of pliers, I would attack my coop, not my run, to get to my birds. Can you say the same?

My run is more secure than my coop, I personally leave the coop door open 24/7.

We do not have a door on our raised coop which we can close. Why? Because of our secure run, low predator risk and climate.

Pro and con discussions are a great tool and with this one, I believe there is no right or wrong answer, just good advice which the OP can use to make a decision based on answers given, their set-up, predator risk, ventilation and climate.

I have the same coop. For a long time it was my only coop. I had six standard sized hens. I closed the door at night. Mine did not have any hardware cloth at the bottom, though mine was inside a dog run, too. It’s definitely not a large coop. I wasn’t super vigilant about closing the door, sometime after the chickens went in on their own at night and there were nights I did forget and thankfully nothing bad happened. Now that coop is home to three bantams (more what it’s really suited for, IMO) and it’s inside a run with electric fencing and I close the door at night when I close the door on the standard birds’ coop.
