Hi, there is 1 single girl out of my 6 Bantams that is trying her hardest to get out of the coop. She is looking like there is no tomorrow. I have been observing her for a while now and cannot figure it out. She is definitely not getting picked on, the coop is large enough for her to have her own space so just don't know. I did let them free range a couple of weeks ago, but this particular one flew away for 3 days. She flew 2.5 kms away and it took a whole team to catch her. She's really on edge and acting wild. Anyone know how to calm her down? The pic below shows her. The one with raised tail feathers.

I am not exactly sure. I got them from someone that had hundreds in small spaces, trying to breed for shows, so I am happy that at least I saved some. I do know that she has got out before and laid eggs though. Is that perhaps what she is trying to do?

That’s what it sounds like if she’s already the age to be laying. Is she laying eggs in the nest boxes?

I really do think she has a nest out there that she wants to get back to. But by now I would think the eggs are long gone or bad.

Oh OK. Yes, she laid eggs just outside of the coop in a strange area. We collected the eggs already. That makes a lot of sense. Should I let her out to go back there? I was worried she may fly away again.

Wow you were exactly right. I dragged the big box in the coop that she used, and she jumped in right away to start nesting. It has a little rubbish in it lol. But anyway, they do have nesting boxes inside, but she didn't want to use it. Thank you for you help, she is completely relaxed now.

Some chickens find the funniest places to choose or make as a nest to lay their eggs. Guess that’s hers. Glad she’s calm now. Maybe that’s like her safety blanket 😊
